PC keystroke equivalents are in the Annotations for this video.
Some very nice shortcuts you may not know about. I've never seen them used in any other tutorials out there. They are, however, in the documentation.
The pop-up Edit Brush Menu (brush blending modes), the convert Background Layer to a regular layer, *and* the duplicate/move layers shortcuts, however, I cannot find in the Adobe documentation... anywhere! There might be other easter eggs around too...

Lost in Photoshop: another old photo restoration part i
Category: Education
Length: 9:01
Description:
I have a tip about straightening the rotation of images -- particularly scanned images.
the old photo is younger than 1901 and older than 1930, I believe. Given the image size (approximately 2 1/4 x 3 1/2) I would guess that it was taken by a Kodak Brownie (probably '2') camera. The original image had faded quite a bit.
I attempt to use various techniques to recover the image, including: level adjustments, use of high pass filter, use of surface blur filter, use of "split masks", and attempting to reconstitute "depth" using linear burn (non-destructively) in an "overlay" [not the mode] layer.

Relationship of RGB to CMY and HSB
Category: Education
Length: 0:49
Description:
An animated representation of the relationships of the RGB, CMY, and HSB color models. The CMY color model is essentially a theoretical color model which, in the real world, must be supplemented with the addition of Black (ink/pigment; becoming CMYK). However, understanding CMY is still fairly important as these are the "secondary" colors (RGB being "primary").
Hopefully, an understanding of these models will help you take some of the guess work out of picking colors!

Feature Tip - OS X ; unscripted
Category: Science & Technology
Length: 2:33
Description:
First tutorial
A quick tip about a feature in the Mac's OS that applies to most documents that will help you navigate to documents from *most* Mac applications (notable exceptions are Garageband and Final Cut.)
This feature is apparently "little known" even to a lot of long-time Mac users.
What I didn't say in the video: the same feature is available in Finder windows as well, which helps out considerably in navigating UP the path chain without having to start at the top of the disk and work back down. This feature is very useful when looking for *related* files that are currently not open in the application -- you won't need to minimize your work to get into the Finder since it will automatically be brought to the front when an enclosing directory is selected from the dropdown menu.
Hopefully this tutorial will be the first of many to come, concentrating, most likely on Photoshop, with a mixture of Motion, Final Cut; and with Logic for the audio side.

Using iWeb for Image Composites - part 1
Category: Howto & Style
Length: 10:53
Description:
All Macs come with iWeb pre-installed. It's in your Applications folder, if you didn't already know.
iWeb has several nice features for dealing with images, including "Instant Alpha", drop shadows, reflections(!), pre-defined shapes, gradients, some *very cool* lines, Text tools -- all can be combined any way you want. Once you have everything arranged, all you need to do is use the system wide copy-screen tool. Using command-shift-4 gives you the option of outlining the area on the screen you want to copy and places a PNG (as of Leopard) on your desktop.
Preview can be used to convert the image to any other graphics format you need -- including Photoshop PSD, although I recommend keeping the PNG format for web graphics.
... And it's all free and already installed!

Apple Motion Project: Gulf Oil Spill animation [Free to use - read description]
Category: Film & Animation
Length: 0:31
Description:
A short animation representing the Gulf oil spill disaster. Free to use -- just drop me a note/comment to let me know where it plays. You can download a high quality version (rendered with 32 float resolution) from:
http://fxmahoney.com/video/free/gulfcoast90_aac_fb_32bit.mov
(right-click/save as...)
file specs: 15MB 720/30p AAC 44.1K/192kbps variable (scales nicely to 1080) 30 seconds
Rendered with Apple Motion 4. A relatively simple project.
Water effect created with Clouds generator using a gradient consisting of shades of blue/cyan. Wave crests created with Caustics generator. In between the Oil Fire emitter with the gradients and settings adjusted to emulate oil effusing into water rather than burning in air.
Audio is a clipping of "Awareness" from Logic Pro.

Apple Motion Project: Happy Halloween (revisited + HD)
Category: Entertainment
Length: 0:15
Description:
This is more how I wanted to create this clip last year.
Starting in Photoshop with a picture of a plain pumpkin, I got the cutout pattern from a jack-o-lantern carving site.
Carefully mask the pumpkin out of the background, duplicate it. Apply the cutout pattern as a mask. Use Layer Effects to apply the "burn in fringe" (various shadows -- to "taste") and Create Layers from the effects, then merge them into an overlay. You also need a general shape to create the inner pumpkin background.
In Motion, add the photoshop image (import all layers). Add a camera (make it 3d). See Mark Spencer's tutorial/podcast on using photoshop layers in 3d space for tips on arranging the layers. For this example, I use the whole pumpkin and keyframed a motion in z-space to slid it back revealing the cutout masked version of the pumpkin -- and simultaneously added an extrusion (keyframed to match the movement of the whole pumpkin layer.) [figure out the final extrusion settings first before trying to keyframe it.] [Use a gradient extrusion, and color match to create the "meat" of the pumpkin.]
[A global spot light was added to illuminate the pumpkin's surface which contributes to the 3-dimensional illusion.]
In between the background and the foreground, add the Holiday Flame and a point light. To the point light, add a randomize behavior to the Intensity of about 30% to create the light flicker.
After the flame is "lit" -- apply the burn-in overlay with a long fade in behavior applied to it.
You can't use a reflection plane as you normally would because the light flicker doesn't get handled correctly so:
Group the pumpkin graphics with the flame AND the light into a group and duplicate it. Rotate it 180 degrees on the X-axis to flip it upside down and blend it into the background (I have everything very dark with the light flicker about the only noticeable reflection.)
Add text -- and use the same technique for a reflection if you want one.
To get the "dripping" effect:
Duplicate the text and add an Image Mask to the original. Use the duplicated text as the mask; then keyframe a downward sliding motion from above the original text. Using a "dripping" font enhances the effect.
Add sound effects... to taste. I used Sountrack Pro and threw together some canned FX and textures. For the scream, I double the sound and put it in two separte tracks at the Pan extremes, left and right, offsetting one track slightly to give it "dimensionality" -- not quite reverb, but similar.

Apple Motion Project: fake cylinder image wrap effect
Category: Film & Animation
Length: 0:24
Description:
I miss being able to wrap images around a cylinder -- spherizing, even with elongation, just doesn't cut it.
Start in Photoshop. Chop your image into 20-30 equal parts (find an even divisor!)
Align all the parts to the left edge and trim the image.
Open the animation window. Select Make Frames from Layers.
Export :: Render Video [Quicktime Movie - if there's transparencies, use ProRes 4444]
In Motion, Replicate the movie. See appleshakeguru's tutorial for text on a circle. Tweak settings to taste.
Do not use a Light -- it will "illuminate" the flatnesses of the "panels!"
If you'd like me to post a tutorial, please leave a comment.

Category: Music
Length: 3:59
Description:
Original composition set to visualizer created in Apple Motion. The effect was achieved with a "light flow" emitter effect run through the kaleidoscope filter and parameters manipulated by the audio. I especially like the "gong" effect in the visuals. The original composition was saved out by track into individual files. Each track controls different parameters of the kaleidoscope and emitter effects.

Sound Collage (revisited revamped and in HD)
Category: Music
Length: 3:16
Description:
I like this EQ animation better than I like the C2 VeeYou animations (which are free plugins for Motion and Final Cut and definitely *worth* checking out!) But I like being able to do things for myself.
I did the original version of this video about 10 months ago in Motion 3 on an original Intel MacBook (it didn't go over all that well.) I used a different approach in the original in which I used black rectangles to cover a photoshop graphic. I used the audio and quantize effects to "reveal" the graphic beneath. In this version, the graphic is just the colored rectangles on a transparent background cropped tightly around one "bar". This time (iMac i7), the audio and quantize behaviors are applied to the "top" crop parameter of the image object (the starting value of which is set to the height of the graphic.) It makes the effect much simpler AND you can use the extrude and other filter effects on the group containing the graphic objects. I may do a tutorial on how to accomplish this if it's requested enough.
From the original "sound collage" video:
As an "experimental" (emphasis on "mental") musician, I tend to do some really weird stuff. This little piece is basically the result of me sitting around "noodiling" on the (Reverend) Warhawk and the (Behringer) V-amp 2. It's 3 different improv tracks + 1 track where I just played chords -- single strum and let them ring. In my track editor, I basically pulled a photoshop-like collage of the parts -- erasing some areas and "blending the edges"... the music is so "flow of consciousness" that it lacks anything resembling a beat -- it's like drifting on the sea... so I added a percussion track at an approximate beat to fit the guitar tracks as a (not a musical) *counterpoint*, i.e., it adds contrast...and, I think, focus. I just wanted to see if I could make something out of, bascailly, random tracks. And I have this theory: you can get away with just about anything as long as you give people a visual stimulus to distract them ... LOL ... hence the animation ( -- "hence"... geez i'm getting old -- and yet another reason why you'll never see ME in any of my videos trying to perform this stuff... the flaws are bad enough without providing the proof.) Anyway, as I've said before, I am, 99.5% of the time, an acoustic guitarist... but I just love the subtle nuances I can get out of the Warhawk/V-amp combination... they're the best toys I currently have in my desktop music setup.

http://sight-creations.com/free_stuff/flag_only_720HD.zip
and the accompanying Apple Motion project:

In Apple Motion: you will probably have to *Reconnect Media* (from the Media tab within the project -- right click on the flag icon) and select the flag image from where it will be unzipped.
The .mov files are in H.264 format in "best" quality. Depending on your NLE, you may have to re-encode to another format (but shouldn't be a problem.) In Final Cut, load the alpha version into a layer underneath the flag movie, then on the top layer: right click and select from the popup menu * Blend Mode * then * Travel Matte Luma *. This demo movie uses exactly these files so you can see how well it works over a motion background.
PS -- there is no audio with these files!

Quality of Time
Category: Music
Length: 2:11
Description:
I bought a Korg MicroX synth to replace an Emu Proteus 2000 that *died* (I don't even know how that happened!) -- and I was just messing around with it one night and recorded this little improv piece (making heavy use of the built in arpeggiator [I'm not really a keyboardist.]) Anyone who knows me (and that's not many) knows how I like aleatory music -- improv qualifies. Anyway -- I liked the "melody" and used Logic to "harmonize" it with a kind of psychedelic trance and a heartbeat. I still like listening to it.
A couple of days ago, I wanted to try out some stuff in Motion. Just practicing really. I originally started out to set up a "needle meter" but starting out, I just set up a simple rotation. I thought to myself, I'll just knock out an "obligatory" clock -- it was just supposed to be simple... LOL... Well, it *looks* simple.
The face is set up to be a kind of mirror. The image in the face was placed with a drop zone, positioned behind the camera, and lit with it's own light. I moved all the clock parts into z-space.
There are two motions in this vid: 1) the entire clock oscillates on the y-axis and 2) only the clock face oscillates -- it's quite an optical illusion if you realize the hands do NOT move! It's kind of cool watching them pass into and out of the face!
The ending is my new "vLogo" which can be seen on my new site at sight-creations.com

Sweep custom located in outer ring. Counter uses a "simple" Sequence Text behavior, using a technique I have not been able to find anywhere else. I may prepare a tutorial soon on the technique if there is any interest.

I rescued the guitar melody from an old cassette tape of a recording I made in approximately 1993. The original sound is altered slightly due to noise reduction/audio enhancements (ain't modern technology great?)
If I remember correctly, the guitar is a Gibson Invader (a guitar I like very much) -- something of a more modern Les Paul Jr. (a little heavier) -- jacked right into my Tascam Porta-05 4 track recorder. The motor noise was terrible and the original recorder was dropped during a move and broken, so playback with the dbx noise reduction it was designed with was out of the question.
To recover the tape, I had to play the tape through a standard recorder. If you know anything about the Tascam portastudios, you know they record at 2x speed. Playback on a standard recorder sounds like half speed... With Audacity I was able to restore the audio to a normal sounding speed. I notched out the frequencies with the tape drive motor noise and tried to enhance the harmonics to restore the sound to a more natural sounding guitar... I was pleased with the results.
The tempo guesstimated at about 110 bpm (1/8 notes -- i could have gone with 55 qn/m) and added percussion samples.
Please remember this was an improvisation - I was just messing around with a simple melody. This is little more than a post-production exercise...

Bron-Yr-Aur by Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin (from "The Song Remains The Same"). It *is* in the movie, but if you're not paying attention, you'll probably miss it!
I recorded this in the kitchen back in about 1992 on cassette tape... I was very fortunate to be able to recover it in halfway decent condition because, I no longer know how to play this piece. Anyway, cassettes were very "noisy" and I worked very hard to clean up the signal. Adding a touch of reverb helped restore some of the timbre NR takes out. The guitar is a 1962 Takamine folk guitar (the label is dated). The story goes that it was owned by "beach bum" in California who had strung it with steel strings. Long story short: the guitar was (better than) restored by Randy Barrow at Tim's Guitar Workshop (Baton Rouge, LA). I've owned it since about 1987/88. timsguitar 10 second spot
Category: Film & Animation
Length: 0:11
Description:
Tim's Guitar Workshop is located in Baton Rouge, LA. As a certified trained luthier, Tim specializes in guitar repair -- one of my *all time favorite* guitars is one that was repaired in his shop (ca 1962 Takamine folk guitar.) Tim also sells new guitars and equipment (pickups, amps, accessories, etc.) Tim expertly "sets up" all of his guitars and I can tell you from my own personal experience, they have all been a *joy* to play! I used to "lust" after Gibson electrics and acoustics -- always have wanted an SG or "better" and a Hummingbird or better... but since the last time I spent in Tim's shop -- I walked out with a Reverend Warhawk and am currently "lusting" after one of the Larrivees I played there. One of the really cool things about Reverend's Warhawk: it is very reminiscent of "the log" -- if you're a hardcore guitarist, you know what I'm talking about -- Les Paul's first electric. Check out the specs on the Warhawk... I'm serious! Then buy one from Tim's. [ LOL -- I am a non-compensated spokesperson for Tim's -- I work on his website from time to time and we've been friends for about 20 years -- that's the extent of my affiliation with Tim's Guitar Workshop.]
About the video:
First: nobody commissioned me to do this -- I just did it because I'm trying to build up some animation chops.
The "video/image wall" was prepared by taking all the logos as single layers in photoshop (cs3) and converting the project into an "animation" (layers to animation). Each layer is a single frame. In motion, the frames animation video is replicated (pre-planned 16 logos to fit) and a hold of about 8 frames [about 4 changes per second roughly]. The logo I had done for Tim's website a few years ago -- I just imported the layers and animated them.
The 10 second music composition ... what can I say... I put it together in about 5 minutes from canned loops and added some foley sounds to accentuate the animation of the logo. I'm fairly pleased with how things synch up together -- not perfect -- but I didn't really spend a lot of time on it... so... not bad.

Oh -- the animation... I did that from scratch. I made an image of the 9 bands of LEDs and the audio controls a black masking layer (sprite) for each one revealing the intesity of that band... it's a fairly accurate representation, but the audio is not really that "hot" -- I fudged the limits so I would get to see some of the peaks during the rendering. It worked out well, but I'm not really that happy with it because I can't just drop in any audio, I'll have to reset it each band any time I want to reuse the effect (and next time I need to rework the graphics to spread them out more to fill the video frame.) For those of you who have the capable software to assemble this effect -- the secret is to quantize the sprite animation so that it reveals a complete "LED" as it moves (without quantizing, you get a very unrealistic revealing of partials LEDs -- still looks good, and it's smooth, but it's not realistic.)

Tim's Guitar Ad - Winter 2010

Winter 2010 version of my client's ad prepared in Motion and Logic.
It's beginning to occur to me that composing graphics and audio to look and sound complete in 15 seconds is an art form!
Audio created in Logic, using Apple Loops. Unfortunately, the actual ad that has been airing is using the voice over track (and music) from the last (fall 09) version of the ad... so far.

Experimental music -- I've been involved with it for over 18 years. Most are experiments in 12-tone/serial music and/or simply aleatoric. Having developed a serial music application for the mac in 1990 ("Evolution #9" [MacWorld Music & Sound Bible*]), I've had the opportunity to experiment with thousands of variations of tone rows and pitch classes; rhythm and dynamics interactions, directed and random. Previously all music produced by Evolution #9 existed only as MIDI files. With the advent of superior software synthesisers for computers, I am finally able to render many of these experiments in such a way as to sound "real!" (finally!)
I also dabble in music mixture and collage, to borrow the term from art. Nearly all the projects are computer/synth based. Some will be improvisational work on guitar collaged with other aspects of synth/foley audio.
Recently I've been extending my experiments into video post. I am very interested in the phenomena of synchronicity and audio-video interactivity.

I especially like the "gong" effect in the visuals. The original composition was saved out by track into individual files. Each track controls different parameters of the kaleidoscope and emitter effects.

The video is just "something to look at," there's no meaning or intended purpose other than providing "jungle" images (and I'm not even all that sure that some of the footage in these old movies wasn't "staged"). It was very cool to accidentally find that Mantan Moreland was in Law of the Jungle (a regular of the Charlie Chan serials of the 40's as comic relief.)
It's kind of cool that the 480i material of the old movies made a reasonably good stretch to 720p. The details are just a little "soft" but what I think made it all possible was applying a Gradient Colorize to the video with a very dark green at the "black" end of the scale. This increased the contrast considerably, slightly colorized the video, and seemed to remove quite a bit of the aliasing that was expected!
The final video did not fare well being exported from FCP as a quicktime conversion and it took compressor to smooth out the occasional "jerkiness" that presented itself from FCP. It took compressor about an hour to encode this less than 4 minute piece in H.264 720p (down-scaled from the original 1080 canvas used.) [That's right! I used 1080 for 480 material.]

Aleatoric Serial Music: A little morning serial
Category: Music
Length: 3:16
Description:
about twenty years ago, I wrote an application (Evolution #9) that creates parametric aleatory serial music from which this is an example. Originally, it was strictly a twelve tone composition experimentation tool. By its final version, it was modified to require just a single pitch be selected as the minimum material for composition. From several sets of parameters (or by default, randomly generated parameters) which include not only pitch order, but also rhythm, dymanics, density, and spacing, the application creates retrogrades, inversions, and retrograde inversions from the motif materials; randomly selects the material "row" and writes the voices/lines of the composition. I do not remember which specific parameters I created; but from my view of aleatoric music, that really doesn't matter -- it's like casting tarot cards: that moment in time determined the composition.
For an overview of the process, please read:
http://fxmahoney.com/resume/MW_Music&SoundBible.pdf
This review is of version 1.x of the application. Version 2 added several more (deterministic) features.
Non-aleatory elements have been added: i.e.: percussion to help round out the composition.
It has been an interesting experiment, and I will have more examples as time goes on; all of which are to be re-rendered and mixed in Logic Pro.
The images of the cosmos are from the NASA library of images (and copyright free.) Something to look at, while you listen.

It's kind of cool watching them pass into and out of the face!

anyway -- the wind was so bad today, the audio from the camcorder was unacceptable... figuring that it would be, I simultaneously recorded the audio with a Zoom H2 portable microphone with the windscreen... good save :) the audio is so clear that applying a lot of gain to bring it up doesn't add any (electronic) noise.

For Gizmo
Category: Pets & Animals
Length: 1:31
Description:
Robert Schumann's Cradle Song, a lullaby, is the background for this short slideshow of Gizmo, who came to us about seventeen years and four months ago, led by her sister "Widget" (the fluffy gray in the first shot) and accompanied by her brother "Gadget". She's the first of the three to go. Of all the cats I've had in the last five decades, her passing has affected me the most. She was brilliant, impish and unbelievably sweet, not to mention beautiful. She engaged us at every level of her life by including us in hers. She wasn't just a cat... or just a pet. ...if this were paper... it would be tear-stained. The pain of "goodbye" is just too great, so I'm just saying "goodnight."
Technical notes:
The "Cradle Song" by R. Schumann was transcribed into a MIDI sequence from one of my old guitar books (it's been almost twenty years, so I don't remember the source) and rendered in Logic Pro. This video was assembled in Apple Motion 4, but there is nothing particularly significant about it's preparation... it's just very simple. Photographs were prepared in Photoshop CS4. Some enhancements were used, but minimally.

iMac Core i7 test drive: Quicktime X screen recording
Category: Film & Animation
Length: 5:00
Description:
Received the iMac yesterday (20th). Spent all day installing all the new software I bought to go with it along with moving over files from the older MacBook (13.3" Core Duo -- first intel Mac laptop -- still running Tiger.) Installing FCP studio and logic studio is time consuming.
Aside: my old Front Row remote for the MacBook works with the new iMac (cool!)
Quicktime X -- new with Snow Leopard... will record from iSight AND will record the screen -- with sound.
The original screen recording is the full 2560x1440 resolution of the iMac and the frame rate turned out to be an average of about 15fps. I resized to 1280x720 and in order to coerce youTube to convert to HD I upped the fps to 24 and added a separate soundtrack.
Anyway -- I've been taking the iMac out for a test drive today... Running a bunch of heavy duty apps, plus EyeTV with a 1080i game on with de-interlace set to always (it seems to burn the most cpu). I had to render a RAM Preview in Motion, and you'll see that -- but the rendering and the playing while the tv was on and the screen recorder running -- the results are pretty awesome.
Although you'll see fairly heavy use of all 8 cores (4 actual x 4 "virtual" hyper-threaded), they aren't "slammed".
... and the magic mouse is so-o-o-o-o-o-o sweet!

TweakWaves Demo: still alive 'n' kicking
Category: Entertainment
Length: 3:47
Description:
remember the olden days of OS X? that little freebie Tweak Films ported to Mac to demonstrate the wave generator they used for "The Perfect Storm" ? I found it on an old archive DVD of mine and thought I'd try it out again -- just for grins...
I have an iMac i7 running Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode (Rosetta installed -- which you have to manually do from your OSX install disk)... TweakWaves is running better than ever. It used to *slam* the G4 processor in my old Titanium; but hardly makes a dent in any of the i7 cores, even running in emulation! So if you still have a copy of it lying around (you can't get it anywhere else!) dust it off and play with it!
That jerky motion is me playing with the parameters... :) You can change the background (reflection source) in the app by importing a QTVR movie (you can find several around on the web, plus the application came with a few of its own.)
One caveat: if you have multiple monitors attached to your mac, make sure they are all on or you will experience some halting animation.
